Overseas Promotions and Assistance

Support Program for the Promotion of Japanese Films Abroad
UNIJAPAN provides grants and subsidies for the production of subtitles as well as travel and promotional expenses required by Japanese filmmakers and producers for participating in overseas film festivals and trade fairs.

Japan Pavilion
UNIJAPAN will establish joint Japanese film exhibition booths at major film festivals held throughout the world for promoting the overseas sales of Japanese films. Plans for the Japan Pavilion are underway at Cannes (May), Toronto (September), Pusan (October), Tokyo (October), Berlin (February), and Hong Kong (March).

J-Pitch: Support Programs for Promoting International Co-Productions
UNIJAPAN sends Japanese film producers seeking joint overseas production partners to major film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Hong Kong where they are introduced to prospective production partners, thus assisting in the building of important human networks between Japanese and overseas film people.

Information Dissemination
UNIJAPAN makes information on Japanese films and filmmaking available through the following three avenues:
(1) Website providing information on Japanese films targeting an overseas audience: www.unijapan.org
(2) Japanese cinema yearbook targeting an overseas audience: “Japanese Film”, published in March
(3) Catalog of new Japanese films targeting an overseas audience: “New Cinema from Japan”, published twice a year in May and October

Information Collection
UNIJAPAN makes the effort to gather information and conduct research and study activities on the state of the cinema industry in the world today through the following channels:
(1) UNIJAPAN News Letter: An e-mail magazine targeting Japanese film people sent out every two weeks to provide information on overseas film festivals and film markets
(2) Overseas networking activities for promoting cooperation and exchange among and between major cinema promotional organizations around the world.
(3) Keeping up-to-date data on Japanese films released overseas as well as articles and write-ups related to such films found in major overseas film media.

Awards and Subsidies

Presenting the Tokyo Sakura Grand Prix as well as other awards for outstanding film, director, and actor in the TIFF Competition category.

Presenting the Best Asian Film Award to an outstanding film in the TIFF Winds of Asia category.

Presenting the Best Picture Award to an outstanding film and Special Award to an individual in the TIFF Japanese Eyes category.

Presenting the Akira Kurosawa Award to individuals making special contributions to world cinema.

Providing active support to film festivals held in Japan.

Education

Conducing active PR with regard to TIFF and the Association’s activities through trade magazines issued in Japan and overseas as well as various media.

Promoting exchange of information and cooperating with other film festivals held in Japan and overseas.

Assisting the promotion of the film industry and helping local communities where the film festival is held.
